LMHA is the
largest landlord in Lorain County. Their goal is to provide both safe and
affordable housing for those who qualify. With the help of other Lorain County
agencies, LMHA is able to provide residents with programs and activities with
the goal of enriching each individual’s life. Services are available for youth,
adults, elderly and those with physical challenges. Programs offered in the past
have included but are not limited to after school tutoring, drug intervention
and prevention programs, small business training, state tested nurses’ aide
training, health and fitness training, and karate classes.
Section 8 Program Facts– How to applying for the
waiting list
Section 8 housing is housing
assistance in which vouchers are provided to income eligible families. It is
a tenant-based form of assistance in which individuals can find tenants
(privately owned housing) who are willing to take Section 8 vouchers.
Section 8 applications are
available at the receptionist desk of the LMHA administrative offices at
1600 Kansas Avenue in Lorain. Office hours are Monday – Friday from 8:00 am
– 4:00 pm.
Please Note:
Applications are acceptedONLY on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00
– 11:00 am and 1:00 – 3:00 pm. No appointment is necessary. Please be
sure to check in with the receptionist when bringing in your application.
You must be interviewed at the time you turn your application in. Do not
just drop it off or have someone drop it off for you. Do not mail in your
application as it will not be accepted.
If you are physically disabled,
do call the office at 288-1600 so that special accommodations can be made.

office for current requirements. This is important as you may not qualify
for the program.
Public Housing Program – Facts
Public housing is
development-based assistance in which eligible individuals apply for public
housing. If an individual or family is placed on a waiting list, they will
be notified when a unit becomes available.
This form of housing is owned
and operated by a government agency – in this case, Lorain County
Metropolitan Housing Authority (LMHA). There are a total of 1654 units in
Lorain County.
There are 675 units designated
for elderly, disabled and singles and are located in Lorain, Elyria, Oberlin
and Amherst.
Two buildings located in Lorain
and Elyria are designated for elderly and disabled individuals only.
Family developments consist of
779 units and are located in Lorain, Elyria, and Oberlin.
Eligible applicants pay 30
percent of their adjusted income toward rent.
In high-rise buildings – all
utilities are provided however residents are responsible to pay their own
telephone and cable television services.
Residents in
family developments are responsible for paying utilities such as gas and
electric.
